State-Specific Medicare Information

Medicare Plans Can Differ by State

It’s important to understand the rules for Medicare in the state where you reside. The majority of states have the same rules and benefits, but some set their own benefits and restrictions. Click on your state in the regional Medicare jurisdiction map above, and it will bring you that state-specific page where you will find an outline of rules and benefits.

Medigap Open Enrollment

Most states offer a six-month open enrollment window beginning on your Medicare Part B effective date. This open enrollment window gives Medicare beneficiaries the option to enroll into any Medicare Supplement plan without undergoing medical underwriting. During this window, insurance carriers are required to accept and approve any Medigap application, regardless of the applicant’s health history. Once you are out of this six-month window, however, depending on your state, you may be required to undergo medical underwriting to apply for a Medicare Supplement plan.

There are certain states, however, that have state-specific enrollment rules which can give Medicare beneficiaries the ability to change their plans without having to undergo medical underwriting. These rules are extremely beneficial if you have any pre-existing conditions. These rules are specific to each state and have different criteria based on where you live.

Medicare Supplement Plans Standardized

Luckily, in 47 of the 50 states in the US, you are choosing your Medicare Supplement plan from the same list of plans. The Medigap plans are differentiated by letters of the alphabet A-N. In each of these 47 states, the plans are standardized, meaning the benefits are the same under a Plan G whether you are in Texas or Florida.

There are, however, three states that do not follow the standard lettered plans. Rather, these states offer their own state-specific plan options. If you live in Massachusetts, Minnesota, or Wisconsin, it is imperative to understand how your Medigap plan options differ from the rest of the country. We have pages devoted specifically to these different plans. Just click your state above for more information!

Medicare Advantage Plans by State

When looking for “Medicare Advantage plans in my area” or trying to find “Available Medicare Plans near me,” it is important to understand that these Medicare Part C plans will vary by not only state but by your zip code as well. Each plan has what is known as a service area, which is an area (zip code) that you must reside in permanently in order to enroll in the plan.

Furthermore, these plans also have networks of doctors and providers that are typically tied to the service area, so it is important to understand the constraints of the plan. Every state will have different insurance carriers and plan options available, so it is important to look at plans specific to your state when it comes to Part C. These plans are not standardized across the majority of the country like Medicare Supplement plans.
