How to Compare Medicare Supplement Insurance Companies
When comparing Medicare Supplement companies, don’t compare benefits first—compare the same standardized plan across insurers.
One of the advantages of Original Medicare with Medigap is that Medigap generally doesn’t use a traditional provider network within the United States.
You can generally use Medicare-covered services from providers nationwide who accept Medicare.
Several standardized Medigap plans also include limited foreign-travel emergency coverage for healthcare emergencies outside the United States.
That makes Medigap particularly attractive to some retirees who travel frequently or spend time in multiple states.
Suppose you live in Florida but spend the summer in Michigan.
With Original Medicare and Plan G or Plan N, you generally don’t need to find a Michigan “Plan G network.”
You simply look for providers who accept Medicare.
This nationwide flexibility is an important distinction from many Medicare Advantage plans.
Generally, yes.
Your standardized Medigap policy is portable within the United States when used with Medicare-covered services.
Your premium may still be based on your residence, but travel itself doesn’t normally limit your provider access to your home ZIP code.
Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover healthcare outside the United States, except in limited situations.
However, several Medigap plans include:
80% foreign-travel emergency coverage
subject to plan limits.
Plan G and Plan N both include this benefit.
Standard foreign-travel emergency Medigap coverage generally includes a separate deductible and lifetime limit.
Because these limits can be modest relative to a major international medical emergency, frequent international travelers should consider whether additional travel medical insurance is appropriate.
Traveling With Medicare Supplement Insurance
If someone travels a lot inside the United States, provider access can become a major part of the Medicare decision.
With Original Medicare and a supplement, you generally don’t have to worry about whether you’ve crossed into another plan service area.
For someone who lives in Florida but spends months with family up north, that flexibility can be very valuable.
International travel is different.
Medigap does provide some emergency protection with certain plans, but I wouldn’t confuse that with unlimited international health insurance.
