Last Modified: 10/05/2026 | Reviewed by Keith Armbrecht (NPN 634015)

Quick Summary

Medicare Part A is the hospital-insurance portion of Original Medicare.

It helps cover inpatient hospital care, qualifying skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and certain home healthcare services.

Most Medicare beneficiaries don’t pay a monthly Part A premium because they or their spouse have sufficient Medicare-covered work history, but deductibles and coinsurance can still apply. (Medicare)

Medicare Part A Explained Simply

Keith's Take

People frequently call Part A “free Medicare.”

That’s not really accurate.

What most people mean is:

They don’t pay a monthly Part A premium.

You can still face a substantial hospital deductible and coinsurance.

That’s why I want people understanding both:

What Part A covers

and

what Part A leaves you responsible for.
