What Does Medicare Assignment Mean?
Medicare assignment means a doctor, provider or supplier agrees to accept the Medicare-approved amount as full payment for a covered service.
Original Medicare usually doesn’t cover healthcare you receive outside the United States.
There are a few limited exceptions, including certain emergencies near the U.S. border and certain situations involving travel through Canada between Alaska and another state.
Because Medicare’s international coverage is limited, people who travel outside the country should understand what Medicare, Medigap and separate travel medical insurance will and won’t cover.
Medicare generally considers the following part of the United States:
Healthcare elsewhere is generally considered care outside the U.S.
There are limited circumstances.
If you’re in the U.S. when a medical emergency occurs and a foreign hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital capable of treating you, Medicare may cover qualifying services.
Medicare may cover certain emergency services at a Canadian hospital when you’re traveling:
by the most direct route between Alaska and another U.S. state, and the Canadian hospital is closer than an appropriate U.S. hospital.
If you live in the United States and a foreign hospital is closer to your home than the nearest U.S. hospital capable of treating your condition, Medicare may cover certain services even when it isn’t an emergency.
Part B may cover medically necessary services aboard a cruise ship in certain circumstances when the ship is:
and other Medicare requirements are satisfied.
Medicare drug plans generally don’t cover prescription drugs purchased outside the United States.
What About Medigap?
Several Medigap plans offer limited:
Foreign Travel Emergency Coverage
Plans G and N are among the standardized Medigap plans that include this benefit.
Do You Need Travel Medical Insurance?
Possibly.
Because Medicare and Medigap foreign coverage can be limited, frequent international travelers may want to consider separate travel medical insurance.
Does Medicare Cover You Outside the United States?
If you travel internationally, don’t assume your Medicare card works the same way overseas as it does in Florida or another U.S. state.
It usually doesn’t.
If you have Plan G or Plan N, you do have some foreign-travel emergency protection, but it’s limited.
For a major international trip, especially a long one, I would look at travel medical coverage separately.
