Medicare Advantage Extra Benefits: What to Watch For Before Enrolling

Last Modified: 10/05/2026 | Reviewed by Keith Armbrecht (NPN 634015)

Quick Summary

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t ordinarily cover, such as certain dental, vision, hearing and fitness benefits.

These benefits can be valuable, but they shouldn’t be the only reason you choose a Medicare Advantage plan.

Benefit amounts, provider networks, frequency limits, eligibility rules and covered services can vary dramatically from one plan to another.

Always understand the medical coverage first.

Key Facts

Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra benefits such as:

  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Fitness programs
  • Over-the-counter allowances
  • Transportation
  • Meal benefits in qualifying circumstances
  • Other supplemental benefits

But:

  • Benefits vary by plan.
  • Benefits can change each year.
  • Dollar allowances may apply.
  • Provider networks may apply.
  • Frequency limitations may apply.
  • Prior authorization may apply in some circumstances.
  • Not every advertised service is unlimited.
  • Some benefits require specific eligibility conditions.
  • A benefit isn’t valuable if you can’t practically use it.

Dental Benefits

A plan may advertise:

“Dental included.”

But that doesn’t tell you enough.

Ask:

  • Is preventive dental covered?
  • Are crowns covered?
  • Are implants covered?
  • Are dentures covered?
  • Is there an annual maximum?
  • Is there a dental network?
  • What percentage does the plan pay?

Vision Benefits

Ask whether the plan covers:

  • Routine eye exams
  • Eyeglass frames
  • Lenses
  • Contact lenses
  • Dollar allowance
  • Frequency limits

Hearing Benefits

A hearing benefit might include:

  • Hearing exam
  • Hearing-aid allowance
  • Reduced hearing-aid prices
  • Specific hearing-aid vendors

Again, check the dollar limits and provider requirements.

OTC Benefits

Some plans provide allowances for approved over-the-counter products.

Understand:

  • How much is available
  • How frequently the allowance resets
  • Where products can be purchased
  • Whether unused amounts roll over

Rules vary.

Don’t Let Extras Distract From Medical Coverage

Before comparing dental or gym benefits, evaluate:

Doctors

Hospitals

Specialists

Prior authorization

Prescription coverage

Medical copays

and

maximum out-of-pocket exposure.

Those issues can become much more important during serious illness.

The Truth About Medicare Advantage Extra Benefits

Keith's Take

Dental, vision and hearing benefits are nice.

But I wouldn’t pick a Medicare Advantage plan because it gives me $1,500 of dental benefits without first asking what happens if I get cancer or need major surgery.

I want the medical coverage evaluated first.

Then use the extra benefits as a tie-breaker, not as the foundation of the decision.
