What Is the Best Medicare Supplement Plan? How to Decide
There isn’t one Medicare Supplement plan that’s best for everyone. For people newly eligible for Medicare today, the three options I most often want compared are: Plan G, Plan N
When comparing Medicare Supplement companies, don’t compare benefits first—compare the same standardized plan across insurers.
A standardized Plan G has the same basic medical benefits regardless of which insurance company sells it.
What can differ substantially is:
The goal is to find a strong combination of coverage, competitive premium and long-term value.
First compare:
Plan G
Plan N
or another Medigap option.
Don’t compare:
Company A Plan G
with:
Company B Plan N
and assume the premium difference comes from the insurance company.
Those are different benefit designs.
Suppose three insurers offer Plan G:
Company A: $145/month
Company B: $170/month
Company C: $205/month
The standardized Plan G medical benefits are the same.
Annual premium difference between A and C:
$720 per year
That’s why comparison matters.
Ask whether the insurer offers:
A 5%–15% discount can materially change the comparison.
Ask whether the policy is:
Community-rated
Issue-age-rated
or:
Attained-age-rated
The rating method can influence how age affects future premiums.
Past increases don’t guarantee future increases.
But reviewing available historical rate information can still provide useful context.
The lowest introductory premium isn’t always the lowest long-term cost.
Consider:
If you’re outside your protected Medigap enrollment period, companies may have different medical underwriting standards depending on your state.
One company may accept a health condition that another doesn’t.
How I Compare Medicare Supplement Companies
This is one area where I think people frequently overpay.
They recognize a large insurance company’s name and assume:
“They must have better Plan G coverage.”
They don’t.
The standardized medical benefits are the same.
I want to compare the carriers offering the plan in your ZIP code and look at:
Premium
discounts
company strength
rate history
and:
long-term value.
Pay for the insurance—not the logo.
