Does Medicare Cover Dental, Vision and Hearing?

Last Modified: 10/05/2026 | Reviewed by Keith Armbrecht (NPN 634015)

Quick Summary

Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine dental care, routine eye exams for eyeglasses, hearing aids or hearing-aid fitting exams.

However, there are important exceptions.

Medicare can cover certain dental services when they’re closely connected with specific Medicare-covered medical treatment, certain medically necessary eye care, diagnostic hearing services, and limited eyewear after qualifying cataract surgery.

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional dental, vision and hearing benefits, but the details vary by plan.

Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover:

Medicare may cover:

After cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens, Medicare Part B can cover one pair of qualifying glasses with standard frames or a set of contact lenses.

Exams solely for fitting hearing aids.

Certain medically necessary diagnostic hearing and balance examinations can be covered under applicable Medicare rules.

Does Medicare Really Cover Dental, Vision and Hearing?

Keith's Take

This is where Medicare Advantage advertisements get a lot of attention.

Dental, vision and hearing benefits are certainly useful.

But I wouldn’t choose an entire medical insurance plan solely because it includes a dental allowance.

Compare your medical coverage first:

Doctors.

Hospitals.

Prior authorization.

Out-of-pocket exposure.

Then look at dental, vision and hearing as additional benefits.
